5fives with Christine Eadie

I’m so pleased I started this feature; it’s meant I’ve discovered some wonderful new photographers, like Christine – her work is so artistic and experimental, it’s right up my street and hopefully yours too! (Do check out Christine’s website, what you see here is just the tip of the iceberg)…

Christine Eadie

I’m a photographer living in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. I initially started photography as a hobby when I was given a 35mm camera around 10-11 years old. I studied painting and drawing in Greece and later became a commercial photographer shooting portraits and weddings here in the USA. I continued with fine art photography and participated in shows at several galleries. In 2012 I made the decision to cease my commercial work and focus only on artwork because that is what I really have a passion for.

My photographs are figurative and have been described by others as having a “dark” and “surreal” feel. I’m currently going in a new direction by embracing wet-plate collodion and other alternative darkroom processes and I’m very excited about it!

Your top five dream photo locations?

1. Venice, Italy

Your top five things that make you laugh?

1. My 15 year old daughter – she is hilarious!

5. The Thin Man movies (starring William Powell and Myrna Loy)

The top five photos you’ve taken?

1. This shot is special to me because the model is a survivor of domestic violence who is now helping other victims. Her story inspired me and I chose to project the lyrics of a Greek song onto her back. The lyrics talk about a strong woman who never gives up. I love that.

2. I love the misty effect I created using a long exposure and a flashlight with white plastic fibers (like a brush) attached. It really was “painting with light” and I like the way it came out.

3. This one was a hit at an art show – I enjoyed seeing the attention and reactions it received. It is a digital collage and took me a long time to create using Photoshop. It isn’t totally realistic, but that was a deliberate choice.

4. This was a real bride just before her wedding ceremony. We were waiting at the front of the church upstairs and one of the bridesmaids joked that the bride should get on top of the piano so we can get a shot, so she did! The light is only the available light from the windows. I love it because it was not pre-planned and she just looks so elegant! All the bridesmaids were gasping just from being there and seeing her pose. It was a magical moment.

5. I am one of those people whose favorite shot is the most recent one they took. This was taken a week or two ago.

Your top five drinks?

1. Cold Coca Cola. (It’s bad for me so I don’t drink it much any more).
2. Peach flavored Ice Tea

5. Coffee

Your top five camera-bag essentials (other than cameras, lenses, and flashes/lights)?

1. Lens cleaning cloth.
2. Extra batteries, memory cards and film.
3. Light meter (when using film).
4. A screwdriver (to tighten my tripod/camera quick-release plates when they get loose).
5. Anything else I will need! I usually take two Pelican hard cases for an average shoot.
