OK, brace yourselves, if you scroll down you’re going to see a lot of photos, and this is just the tip of the iceberg really – I still have films to develop and Polaroids to scan.

These are all taken with a Canon 5D MkII and most are using my 17-40mm f/4 lens. It’s definitely a wide-angle sort of place!

I have stuck my mobile phone out on the windowsill of my hotel room and made it ‘do wi-fi’ and here I am; on my laptop, online in the middle of the Lake District! I’m in the rainiest county in England and England is the raniest nation in… probably the world, and yet the sun is shining, the skies are blue and it looks set to stay that way – amazing!

As well as the compact flash cards I am filling at a rate of knots, I have a whole stack of Polaroids (oh, they look amazing – Polaroid film was made for this landscape), rolls and rolls of film and eyeballs full of wonderful sights – the reason I wanted to get online so badly though was to share my latest piece of writing that has been published in the guardian today!

The Lake District; it’s very hilly, they make amazing gingerbread and there are sheep EVERYWHERE!

Wish you were here.

I hope all is well and good for you all. I am happy, lucky, well and loved. I am also very grateful.

I don’t need to tell you that there have been some terrible things happening in the world lately; Somalia, Norway, Amy, to name a few. They all demand attention; some just need contemplation, others demand a more direct approach but I do believe that as human beings we should all ensure we are as informed, aware and prepared to learn and grow from each awful thing as we can be.

We can be better.

This is where I can show off one of the few proper flower names I know; echinops. I have no idea why that particular one has lodged itself in the tiny bit of my brain that actually remembers the proper name for things, but it has.

I am especially fond of spiky, globular flowers – I may have to plant some of these for next years garden.

I have a soft spot for brutalist architecture. I know it’s not everybody’s cup of tea but I prefer that a designer has tried something different and innovative with new materials rather than try and replicate the past on the cheap.

This is Castle House, erected on the site of the original motte and bailey Southampton Castle built a thousand years earlier. If the Normans had had the materials and know-how back then I can’t help thinking this is the sort of thing they’d have knocked up.

I’ve not seen the film Crossing Delancey since I put ye olde video casette recorder out to pasture many years ago. It was my go to comfort film; whenever I was off work sick and stuck alone in my flat with no one to do my bidding I would put this on, wrap myself in a duvet and feel the love (and the puzzlement as to why having a pickle shop could be seen as as a bad thing). I may have to see if I can get hold of this on DVD and relive that love and comfort.

Anyhoo – the reason I mention it is because this poem is quoted in it – based on the Chinese Book of Songs, I adore the imagery and simplicity…

ripe plums are falling
now there are only five
may a fine lover come for me
while there is still time

ripe plums are falling
now there are only three
may a fine lover come for me
while there is still time

ripe plums are falling
i gather them in a shallow basket
may a fine lover come for me
tell me his name
