Look at this…

bodiam castle

…it’s the most perfect fairytale castle ever, don’t you think? This is Bodiam Castle in East Sussex – it’s one of the places we visited earlier in the week during a (much needed) mini-break. Do I sound a bit ‘Bridget Jones’y calling it a mini-break? It’s what we call them!

East Sussex isn’t really all that far from where I live – any of you who live in vast countries – even medium-sized countries – will probably think it’s rather amusing that I consider somewhere 120 miles away to be worthy of needing overnight accommodation and military planning! That’s what happened though – it was great!

On this little island you only need to travel a handful of miles to be in a completely different sort of place, and this is very apparent when you’re in East Sussex – so one day it was all fairytale castles and medieval architecture, the next it was Dungeness.

dungeness

Oh, Dungeness! There needs to be a whole post on you, yes, definitely. I can’t sum the place up here really, suffice to say it should be called Weirdsville.

Then a few miles more and you’re at Beachy Head – again, jaw-dropping.

beachy head

We took in lots of other spots in the area too and obviously I took lots of cameras with me, so expect quite a few views of East Sussex coming up in the next few days – it was very photogenic and I took over a million photos!

We made it!

Well, here we are then – the one-hundredth day of winter (actually, today is day 101 – I’m running late with EVERYTHING at the moment – yikes)!

winter trees

I’ll admit it was sometimes an effort to stay positive and inspired when darkness fell not long after lunchtime and the cold winds blew, but I feel that viewing winter as a photographic opportunity and actively seeking out beauty in things that were uniqulely wintery definitely helped me stay positive and entusiastic throughout the season.

feathers and mittens

What I loved most of all though was viewing the winter experiences that others were having – some things looked familar – other things looked wildly different but they all look beautiful!

1. Sheep watching…, 2. muskoka, ontario, 3. Day Sixty, 4. 39|365, 5. snowstorm, 6. Untitled

These are just a few from the flickr group – thank you to everybody who contibuted, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did – and here’s the best news of all…. it’s now spring! (Apologies to southern hemisphere… although as you get better weather in the winter than we often do in the summer (certainly here in UK) I hope it means you can forgive my gloating)!

What was your favourite thing about winter? I think mine was the watery, distant sunlight – a bit like ‘golden hour’ but all through the day, all be it a short day.

Oh, and the hot chocolate :)

How to make your photos look like paintings

Posted in: Digital, Free, Life, Photography, Tutorials|4 Comments

Firstly, let me just say I don’t think I have ever felt the need to turn one of my photographs into a painting before. I am perfectly happy that my photos look like photos and that my paintings look like an explosion in a paint factory.

deer - they look painted, don't you think?

That said, when I saw this technique on the Adobe forums I was intrigued by its simplicity and when I tried it I was like ’OMG’ (yes, I really said that) – and best of all, it is so, so SUPER easy! There are instruction and downloads below for both Photoshop and Lightroom.

i was up all night painting this! (not really)

PHOTOSHOP METHOD – everything happens within Photoshop’s RAW plugin. This is what you do…

Here’s everything mentioned above packaged up into a convenient preset so you can load and go…
Painterly – camera raw preset

Je suis un artiste!

It took bloody ages painting in all those berries

this was a lovely spot to set up my easel

You now have all the tools you need to trick family and fiends into believing you’re a bone-fide artiste without the need to spend years at art school or all those messy oils and pastels.

You’re welcome.

Step-by-step: how to give your photos an Instagram-style effect

Posted in: Digital, Photography, Tutorials|9 Comments

I’ve had some very positive feedback about the Instagram-style Photoshop actions I created a few days ago – I’m glad you liked them!

As requested, for those with older versions of Photoshop or who use non-Adobe software, here are some instructions will hopefully help you to create the effects for yourself…

1. This All Used To Be Fields

sweet peas - with instagram effect

i) Open image

ii) Create a ‘Color Balance’ adjustment layer…
-Set the ‘Shadows’ to +9, +5, -5
-Set the ‘Midtones’ to -8, -24, -15
-Set the ‘Highlights to +15, +16, -9

color balance

iii) Now create a ‘Hue/Saturation’ adjustment layer above the previous one…
Set the ‘Master’ (default) setting to +3, -23, -1

iv) Make a new layer above image and fill it with the colour R255 G217 B204 and change the mode to ‘Multiply’

v) Make another new layer above this and fill it with the colour R0 G0 B255 and change the mode to ‘Lighten’ and the opacity to 50%

pink and blue layers

And that’s it!

2. Let’s make a mix-tape

tree with instagram effect applied

i) Open image

ii) Create a ‘Curves’ adjustment layer – alter your red, green and blue curves as well as the combined RGB curve (the black line) so they look like this…

iii) Now, select all (Ctrl + A) and go to Edit > Copy merged
Then Ctrl + D to deselect all and then Edit > Paste

iv) In the layers palette, right-click on this new layer and choose ‘Convert to Smart Object’

v) Now go to ‘Filter’ > ‘Lens Correction’

vi) In this new dialogue select the ‘Custom’ tab and halfway down in the ‘Vignete’ settings, choose -50 and +50, then OK.

And you’re done!

iii) Above this create a layer filled with solid colour R255 G0 B204

pink layer

iv) Set the mode of this layer to ‘Soft Light’ and the opacity to 20%

Easy peasy!

Don’t forget that all these effects are available as Photoshop actions which you can download for free.

Afterlife

If there’s one thing that’s nicer than a hydrangea then it is a dead hydrangea! There aren’t many (any?) things that look better in their afterlife… I don’t think.

hydrangea 1 - a bit dead

hydrangea 2 - a bit deader

hydrangea 3 - one a bit dead the other very dead

hydrangea 4 - blue and a bit dead

Whilst I’ve been gone…

During my down time I sent Mr M out to give my 5D to the camera store so they could clean the mucky sensor. Whilst I have been known to add grimy, dirty textures to my images in the past, I prefer to have originals that look squeaky clean (and it’s essential if you’re shooting video).

The dirt on my sensor isn't this bad, but almost! This was added in Photoshop.

On the same trip he alsobought me a bundle of Kodak film – yay! It was from Poundland. Guess how much it was?

I am obsessed (with a capital OB) with this website.

I’m always seeing faces in inanimate objects, are you? Actually I think that’s a ‘human being’ thing, not just me – anyhoo, seeing this street art by Nomerz is making me want to grab a balaclava and a can of spray paint and make those faces come alive, too! (Exept mine wouldn’t be this good).

I’ve been dreaming of eating normal food again, particularly this and this.

Also food related, here’s a recipe that looks like it might be a homemade substitute for the healthy and delicious (but v pricey) Nak’d Bars – can’t wait to try it out!

I want to go and see The Muppets!

some muppets

According to my arbitrary calculations there are only 17 days left of winter, including today! And even though I MISSED what looks to be our only snowfall of the year (boo!), I am going to do my best to capture some wintry wonderfulness over this last couple of weeks. 100 days goes fast!

Just look at this delicious new digital camera. Yes please!

The results of those huge photography competitions usually leave me feeling a bit… meh with the results (probably due to huge committees of judges watering everything down to the lowest common denominator) – however the 2011 World Press Photo of the Year Award images are all amazing and tell such amazing stories, without the need for any words – especially the winning photograph by Samuel Aranda.

Thinking about getting a SodaStream – I’m a bit adverse to yet another kitchen gadget, but I love fizzy water (and pop) so it would get a fair bit of use, I reckon.

Ummm, think that’s it for now – thanks for all your well-wishes, you’re all lovely. I think I may have passed it on to the mister though – oops! Happy Valentine’s day for tomorrow, sweetie :D x
