Brick Lane

Posted in: Digital, Photography|23 October, 20124 Comments

I think Brick Lane has to one of my favourite venues for a Sunday afternoon jaunt, and as I got to spend a long weekend in London, that’s exactly where I headed.

It’s not touristy like the Tower of London is touristy – everyone’s made a bit of an effort to get here because they want to see and be seen and to be immersed into the intense spicy mix of humanity.

Brick Lane; it’s a full-on sensory workout and everyone’s got a camera!

Feel… the people. Yes, it’s slightly on the sardine side but it’s totally manageable - and I’m someone who really doesn’t do big scary crowds. You’ll step through small doorways into huge run-down warehouses – transformed into vintage fairs or food festivals. You’ll love it.

Smell… the food. It’s everywhere and from every corner of the globe.

Hear… the music. Buskers and beat-boxers, dj’s and poetry. It’s all here to hear.

Taste… you know the food I mentioned? Yeah, that.

See… the street art. If you go for one thing, go for this!

I did Brick Lane too at the beginning of the month, we overlap on the shot of the giant crane / stork.

I like the shot of the people cooking and many others….

I’m doing Columbia Road market next month.

You know I’m not sure I went there when I lived in London… I obviously need to rectify that, your photos are amazing!

Is it just me or is street art having a bit of a revival at the moment? I mean I know there have always been some brilliant graffiti artists about, but it seemed for a while there that tagging (which i don’t like) was the predominant feature of most urban (and non-urban) public spaces. Recently though, there has been a veritable explosion of colourful and imaginative art (both painted and pasted, or even chiseled into the fabric of buildings). Or is it just that I’ve been keeping my eyes open more widely and noticing things that I didn’t before? Some creative genius did some cool stuff with shopping trolleys near me recently. I have pictures and will post soon. I’m loving it!
